I didn't want you to think that the good deeds are forgotten though. I have continued to do them, even though I haven't been blogging about it. I did download the app so that I will be able to post more frequent but shorter blogs.
I recently turned 30 and as a celebration I wanted to do Random Acts of Kindness. I asked my friends on Facebook to join along with me and do RAoK also. Sadly, not that many did but the ones that did totally made me happy and brought a smile to my face! Here are some of the comments that I got:
- There was a homeless guy with his wife and child by the side of the road with a sign asking for help because he had 3 kids. The mom had a headscarf and their skin was dark, so I guessed maybe they were Muslim. Since I didn't know what dietary restrictions they might have, I got them a $20 Walmart gift card. Other people had brought them various food items, so I'm hoping that they got some good help.
- My random act of kindness was donating $ for a MS charity bike ride. :-)
- I swiped some one in on the subway who was out of money on their card. #happy 30th birthday pork chop!
- Happy Birthday My Laura!!!!!! OH! I let my son takeover the TV in the living room this morning while I'm working! Random act of kindness that I will not be doing again, but only doing it b/c it's your birthday and you asked me too! LOL!
- Happy birthday Laura!! I'm not sure I'm getting this whole random act of kindness thing. I punched an old lady that was trying to cross the street and people started yelling at me. I'll try something else today. In the meantime, I hope you have the most blessed year yet and I'll be in Nashville the weekend of Aug 10.
- Later that day I then received that this message: As a make up I bought donuts for my team this morning. And smiled at an old person as I held the door open for them on the way out. Far less yelling this time.
- my idea was to take a friend from years ago to lunch. They've moved back to Nashville after a difficult breakup up North. Figured a meal and a house warming gift usually help someone feel better. Enjoy your day and month long Festival of Ellison
- I have really enjoyed reading your posts of the past week and did a couple of thinks thinking specifically about you, and of course the people. Hugs and thanks for your thoughtful heart.
- I totally forgot to tell you what acts of kindness I did for your birthday this past week. SO sorry! Well first off I gave 2 different people 4 trees each to plant in their yards. Not only does it make their yard look good it helps us all breathe better. I thought you would appreciate that! I didn't stop there since you are such an awesome person! My next feat was something I can't go into much detail on but lets just say I went WAY beyond my normal role and helped someone get the information they needed. I said to myself....this is in honor of Laura's Birthday...Just because she is AWESOME!!!! I hope your day was AWESOME!!!
- Happy late birthday! I love your idea of random acts of kindness as bday gifts! My kind act was that I didn't charge a patient for their exam this week. She was 5 years old and her mom said she had 4 other kids. She had a hearing loss and I referred her to the ENT, where I know they'll charge her.
- Hey Laura. Happy Birthday. Celebrated you today by paying a friend in need's doctor bill (she's on FB so didn't wanna post it). I thought this was a fantastic and heartwarming idea. So glad you put it out there. Stay classy
- And in your honor - I sewed all the badges on my neighbor's American Heritage Girls Vest.
- I can't find another comment that was left on my status but it was from a childhood friend's mom who hemmed a dress for a friend and didn't charge them.
I also did a number of RAoK to celebrate. That week I made felt flowers pins (thankfully I had help from an amazing friend one night) and on Saturday that friend, her husband, and I went to the nursing home where her grandmother had spent the last weeks of her life and we passed out the pins. The old people were so sweet! Since it was the day before Mother's Day we told them it was in honor of that and they were very appreciative. I am hoping to go back on a more regular basis and continue the relationships I started with the people there.
I taped up these envelops with enough money in them for one person to get something out of each of the vending machines we have in the break room at work.
I also helped volunteer at a Family Fun Fest that the daughter church of my church put on for a diverse area of town. I helped out with two friends to give out the prizes that the kids could trade their tickets they won from the games. There was a craft area nearby that people could go and make adorable bracelets at. There were some of the cutest clutches there for people to buy. Check out www.chamelscreations.com to see them! Adorable!! There was also a ministry there called Girls Living 4 God that seems amazing! I am hoping to get plugged in with them and be able to serve with them. Check out more about them here.
I have a good friend from Knoxville who got some horrible news on May 3rd. His sister had been in a very bad accident, she had been riding her bike and hit, of all things, an ambulance that had come because another biker had gone over a guard rail. She is still in the hospital and is starting to recover but the uphill battle will be a long one. She was in Chattanooga and still is in the hospital there. Knowing that my friend had made several trips back and forth from Knoxville, I knew that he was tired, emotionally and physically, and I knew that he was staying a few nights with a mutual friend in Chattanooga. Other than praying, I wanted to do something to help out my friend during this time. The best thing that I could think of was to send gift cards for restaurants. It sucks to have to eat out all the time because you're at the hospital or on the road and it is a strain on the finances as well. I figured this will allow him to get some good food without having to worry about cost. I was very humbled to get this message from him: You are too kind. Thank you so much for the gift cards you sent. [Our mutual friend] gave me the card today and I was pleasantly surprised to get a piece of mail but also not surprised when I saw it was from you!
An interpreter colleague turned professor that I worked with back in Knoxville recently received some very scary news regarding cancer. She has dealt with some other health issues in the past and it is so sad to see the bad news continuing to come. Somebody designed T-shirts in support of her so I decided to buy one as one of my good deeds. I also wrote a note that I hope was encouraging and not offensive. It included this quote from one of my favorite blogs, Momastery:
I told her that I'm sure there were going to be shitty times up ahead but hopefully she would be able to find a way to making see them as holy shitty. She's going to be having surgery this week so please keep her in your prayers along with my other friend's sister. I hope and pray that they grow in their faith and that this suffering will only deepen their reliance on God.
But then I thought that maybe I do have faith, it’s just a different kind of faith. I believe that shit happens. But that with the right eyes, ears, patience, and perspective, that shit can become Holy. I just read this quote from Robert Frost… “In three words I can sum up everything I know about life: it goes on.” I think that’s so beautiful. Makes me think about Anna’s Jack.Right now, if I had to define life – it would be this: Holy Shit. It’s all holy. All of it, especially the worst of it. I know this. Just gotta keep reminding myself.I love you.
This video is a great example of living the best you can, while you can.
Also, I think it is pretty amazing that so many celebrities helped out with this video:
Well that is it from me! I did a few more RAoK but I won't go into them on this post since it is long enough- just know that I forced somebody to go in front of my at the grocery store and Target, I returned carts at Kroger, I complimented a stranger's outfit at the dollar store, I baked 3 dozen muffins to take to the fire station but then kept running so late to work that I never had time to drop them off so I just gave them to coworkers, and a few more RAoK activities. I hope that you are all doing well and find ways to spread some kindness near you wherever you are!
